St. Dominic's Carolyn Joseph and Winslow's Michael McCann Receive Maine McDonald's® All-State Academic Scholarships
BANGOR, Maine (March 11, 2011) -- The Maine McDonald's® Owner/Operators Association tonight announced the recipients of the 2011 Maine All-State Academic Scholarship. Carolyn Joseph of St. Dominic Academy and Michael McCann of Winslow High School each received a $2,000 scholarship award at the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches (MABC) Awards Banquet at Husson University.
Carolyn Joseph is a National Merit Finalist and received the Princeton Book Award, the Harvard Book Award and the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Maine Achievement Award. She was one of three Maine students nominated to attend the Congressional Academy in Washington D.C. where she received an "A" in the associated class from Ashland University. A dedicated athlete, she was a three sport athlete for four years at St. Dom's in basketball, serving as the captain her senior year; Cross Country, serving as Captain for three years; and was the #1 seed on the Tennis team all four years, serving as captain for three years, and twice named MVP. For her outstanding work in community service, Joseph received the Andrew Paione Award for Excellence in Service.
Michael McCann maintained an "A" average throughout high school, earning Highest Honors for every year. He is the President of the National Honor Society and received multiple honors and awards for academics, sports and the arts. McCann played varsity basketball four years and served as a team captain in his senior year. He was a referee for youth basketball and a basketball coach for youth summer recreational basketball.
Since the fourth grade, he has regularly volunteered at the Evening Sandwich Program, preparing food for needy families. An alto saxophone player, McCann has competed in regional and state jazz festivals, was selected for All-State Chorus and was named Outstanding Soloist at district and state music competitions.
The Maine All-State Academic Scholarship was created to recognize two members - one girl and one boy - selected from the Maine McDonald's All-State Academic Team. The ten boys and ten girls selected to the All-State Academic Team were nominated by their coaches and were chosen to represent the more than 148 high schools in the state of Maine.

Also honored at the MABC Awards Banquet were members of the All-State Academic Team, the Maine McDonald's High School Senior All-Star Basketball Players, All-Star Coaches, the Maine McDonald's Spirit of the Game Award recipients, the MABC Media Award honoree, and Mr. and Miss Basketball.
The 2011 Maine McDonald's High School Senior All-Star Games will be played at Newman Gymnasium on the campus of Husson University in Bangor on Saturday, March 12. The game-day program will feature head-to-head competition between top players in the state's A/B and C/D Boys and Girls divisions. Game Day tickets are available at the door and are good for all four Games. Tickets are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for students.
