MR. AND MISS BIOGRAPHIES

MISS BASKETBALL 2010

CHRISTY MANNING, SCARBOROUGH H.S.

Christy Manning played power forward for the Scarborough Red Storm with an emphasis on the word “power.” Not coincidentally, Scarborough became a power in Class A with her intimidating presence on the floor.

The 6-foot Manning averaged 15 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists for the

Red Storm to lead them to a perfect season and their first Class A state title.

Known for being a virtually unstoppable scoring threat, the completeness of

her game was on full display in the championship against Skowhegan, when

she tallied 12 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two blocked shots.

Christy didn’t start playing basketball until she was in sixth grade, but she was a force by the time she reached high school, leading the Red Storm in scoring in rebounding three straight years. She earned Southern Maine Activities Association honorable mention as a sophomore, then garnered first team recognition her junior and senior seasons. She also was named All-State by the Bangor Daily News and Portland Press Herald as a junior. This year, she was voted the SMAA’s most valuable player. The award is named after her mother, Lisa Blais Manning, an outstanding player at Westbrook.

A four-year track standout at Scarborough, Christy holds school records in the shot put, discus and javelin. She participated in New England’s as a sophomore and junior and was named all-SMAA her sophomore and junior years. She earned All-State honors from the Maine Track & Cross Country Coaches Association last year.

Christy is a National Honor Society member, reaching the honor roll her sophomore and senior years and high honors as a freshman and junior. She is active in Key Club and has volunteered for the Boys & Girls Clubs, the Special Olympics, and for a local food pantry. She has participated in a bike and walk-a-thon for AIDS, coaches and referees youth basketball and tutors at Scarborough Middle School.

The daughter of Ed and Lisa Manning, Christy plans to attend Holy Cross on a track scholarship.

Indiana Faithfull, Cheverus High School

Mr. Basketball 2010

Pressure was the trademark of Cheverus’ championship defense this year, and Indiana Faithfull was the player who made grace under pressure his trademark.

A native of Sydney, Australia, Indiana became Cheverus’ starting point guard his sophomore year. With him running the offense, the Stags won 54 of 58 games, three Southern Maine Activities Association titles and two state championships. This season, his second as a co-captain, he averaged 12 points, five rebounds and six assists per game. He scored 20 points just once during the regular season, due to lopsided scores limiting his playing time. But he rose to the occasion in the post-season, pouring in 23 points in the Western Maine final and 22 points in the state championship game and was the recipient of the Vinal Trophy as the outstanding player in the Western Maine tournament.

With the 6-foot-4 Faithfull disrupting the opposition, the Stags led the SMAA in defense the last three years and gave up 50 or more points just twice this season en route to the Gold Ball. His long reach and quick hands caused countless deflections, resulting in many steals by his teammates, and made Cheverus’ full court pressure a game-changing factor in many victories.

Indiana was the SMAA Rookie of the Year as a sophomore, named to the All-SMAA his junior and senior years, and an all-state selection by both the Bangor Daily News and Portland Press Herald the last two years. He is a McDonald’s All-American nominee and Gatorade Player of the Year nominee and was chosen to play in the New England Hall of Fame All-Star Game.

The son of Janeen Faithfull and Marc Schaffer, Indiana has volunteered for the Special Olympics for the last three years and recently for a local soup kitchen. He also mentors Cheverus freshmen. His future plans include staying in the U.S. to attend college and play basketball.
