Messalonskee’s Mikayla Turner and Spruce Mountain’s Erik Taylor Receive Maine McDonald’s

The Maine McDonald’s® Owner/Operators Association tonight announced the recipients of the 2014 Maine All-State Academic Scholarship. Mikayla Turner of Messalonskee High School and Erik Taylor of Spruce Mountain High School each received a $2,000 scholarship award at the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches (MABC) Awards Banquet at Husson University.

Mikayla Turner is in the top 1% of her class. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars. She is an AP Scholar with Distinction and a Maine Sports Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete of the Year. For 4 years Turner has achieved High Honors with distinction and has received numerous District Merit Awards and two awards from the Society of Women Engineers.

For more than 3 years, Turner has been a starter on the Varsity Basketball, Field Hockey and Lacrosse teams.  She is the second female in Messalonskee High School history to earn 12 varsity letters in team sports.  She plans to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering.

Erik Taylor is a National Merit Semifinalist, an AP Scholar, a National Honor Society Chapter President, Boys State Delegate and St. Michael’s College Book Award Winner. He is President of the Student Council, Valedictorian of his Class, an Eagle Scout and a Mountain Valley Conference Math Team First Place Scorer from 2011 to 2013.

Taylor has played high school basketball and soccer for four years and was named to the Mountain Valley Conference All Academic Teams in both sports.

A dedicated leader on and off the court, Taylor organized and led study groups for his teammates.  In addition, he was a volunteer mentor for the Middle School LEGO League Team that qualified for the North American Championships.  He is considering a course of study in Biomedical Engineering.

The Maine All-State Academic Scholarship was created to recognize two members – one girl and one boy – selected from the Maine McDonald’s All-State Academic Team. The ten boys and ten girls selected to the All-State Academic Team were nominated by their coaches and were chosen to represent the more than 148 high schools in the state of Maine.

Also honored at the MABC Awards Banquet were the Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Basketball Players, Regional Foul Shooting Champions, All-Star Coaches, members of the All-State Academic Team, the Maine McDonald’s Spirit of the Game Award recipients, Maine McDonald’s/Maine Red Claws Team of the Year Award recipients and the MABC Contributor Award honoree.

The 2014 Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Basketball Games marks McDonald’s 26th consecutive year as lead sponsor of this event.  This year’s games will be played at Newman Gymnasium on the campus of Husson University in Bangor on Saturday, March 8th.  Game day tickets are good for all four Games and may be purchased at the door.
