The Maine Association of Basketball Coaches (MABC) presented its prestigious Bob Brown Contributor Award to former Cony High School Girls Coach Paul Vachon. The award was presented at the 2009 Maine McDonald’s® High School Senior All-Star Basketball Games banquet at Husson University in Bangor. Each year, the All-Star Games committee selects an honoree who has made a significant contribution to the sport of basketball in Maine.
“Paul Vachon has demonstrated an unfailing commitment to high school basketball since the early 1970s,” said MABC President Peter Murray. “From his early years playing schoolboy hoops at Cony High School in Augusta, to his 23 seasons of coaching the girls program there, he has helped to showcase high school basketball throughout the state. We are proud to recognize him for his contributions to Maine basketball.”
Vachon began his career at Messalonskee High School where he coached for two years before moving to Cony High School for the next 23 years. At the helm of the Cony Girls’ program, Vachon coached in 20 Eastern Maine championship games, winning 11 Eastern Maine titles and 7 state titles. He compiled a record of 451 wins and 40 losses. Vachon has coached 22 former McDonald's All-Stars and 5 Miss Basketball Finalists, with 3 winners. In 2002 he was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. Vachon stepped down as the Cony Girls' varsity coach in May 2008 to serve as Cony High School's athletic director. He continues to oversee the Capital City Basketball Clinic in Augusta which he founded in 1985.
