The Event

The Maine McDonald’s® High School Senior All-Star Basketball Games is a salute to top senior student-athletes basketball standouts and coaches from across Maine. More than 100 individuals are honored for their achievements both on and off the basketball court at the All-Star Banquet on Friday night, March 13, and at the Games on Saturday, March 14. Net proceeds from the two-day event go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities ® of Maine.

McDonald’s Role

The 2009 program marks McDonald’s twenty first consecutive year as lead sponsor of this hallmark event. In addition to underwriting the cost of planning and executing the event, the Maine McDonald’s Owner/Operator Association, a collaboration of 14 local Maine McDonald’s franchisees, works hand-in-hand with the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches and several sponsors to make the event possible.

2009 Venue

The event will once again be held at Newman Gymnasium on the campus of
Husson University in Bangor. The All-Star Banquet takes place Friday evening,
March 13, and the Games take place throughout the day on Saturday, March 14,
2009.

Net Proceeds

Net proceeds from ticket sales, souvenir sales and program book advertising go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) of Maine.

Selection Process

All-Star Players, All-State Academic Team Members, and Mr. and Miss Basketball are all selected from nominees submitted by Maine’s High School Basketball Coaches through the MABC. All-Star ballots are mailed to every high school coach in Maine, and results are tabulated by MABC officials. Mr. and Miss Basketball award recipients are selected by a committee of media representatives and retired coaches representing each region in Maine.

All-Star Players

A total of 80 High School Senior All-Star Players are selected from top senior basketball players from across the state, ten in each of eight categories, according to Girls/Boys, East/West, and High School classification:

Girls A/B East and Girls A/B West
Girls C/D East and Girls C/D West
Boys A/B East and Boys A/B West
Boys C/D East and Boys C/D West

All-State Academic Team

A total of 20 seniors (10 girls and 10 boys) are selected from across the state among basketball players who excel both in the classroom and on the basketball court.

Foul Shooting Competition

Each year, the MABC organizes regional foul-shooting championships throughout the winter. Champions from each of the four regions (North, Central, East and West) are invited to compete for the State Foul Shooting Championship at the McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Games.

Maine McDonald’s Spirit of the Games

Maine McDonald’s Spirit of the Game Award: New in 2009, this award honors two high school seniors – one from the East and one from the West Division – who embody the spirit of the sport, exemplify sportsmanship, show an ability to overcome obstacles and boundaries, and support and inspire their teammates and coaching staff. The recipients will be honored at the Friday evening banquet and also serve as managers for their respective divisional teams on Game Day.

Scholarships

The local Maine McDonald’s Owner/Operators award two $1,000 scholarships. The recipients (one girl, one boy) are selected from the ten girls and ten boys named to the All-State Academic Team through a separate application and review process. The scholarship award is intended to recognize the students’ academic performance, contributions to his or her high school and community, participation in volunteer activities, and overall citizenship.

All-Star Coaches

All-Star Coaches are selected from across the state, two in each of the same categories as the players.

MABC Awards

Each year, the MABC (Maine Association of Basketball Coaches) recognizes individuals who have contributed to high school basketball in Maine. There are four awards, as listed below:

Bob Brown Contributor Award

The Bob Brown Contributor Award is presented each year to an individual who has made significant contributions to improve the quality of basketball in the state of Maine.

MABC Media Award

The MABC Media Award is presented each year to an individual in the media for their outstanding coverage of High School basketball in the state of Maine.

MABC Coach of the Year Awards

Each year, the MABC selects a “Coach of the Year” recognizing coaches throughout the state who have demonstrated excellence in their profession. They typically have given above and beyond and tend to bring out the best in their players. For their excellence, they are voted by their coaching peers to receive these awards.

Mr. and Miss Basketball

The Mister and Miss Basketball Award is presented each year to the senior player who has exhibited outstanding skills throughout his/her career, has made a significant impact on his/her team, has demonstrated respect for the game through leadership on and off the court, has epitomized the values of sportsmanship and has been a positive school and community citizen.
